Ellis (Harvard, M.D. 1881) did postgraduate study at the Harvard Medical School in physiology with Henry P. Bowditch. After 1886 he was an ophthalmologist in Springfield and Monson, Mass. He conducted ophthalmological experiments; and his research focused on the physiology and psychology of visual sensations and perceptions. Ellis' inventions included the prism-stroboscope.
